European Council of Medical Orders

Revision of the “Coercive measures in medicine” guidelines

The Central Ethical Committee of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences develops guidelines and recommendations for medical practice and biomedical research. In 2015, the commission revised the guidelines on coercive measures in medicine in order to provide doctors with practical help on this issue. Although patients should in principle be able to give consent independently to medical interventions, there are however situations in which coercive measures cannot be avoided.

The guidelines are available in English, French, German and Italian.
